Road Accidents Victoria

The latest Victoria Police data for 2009 shows Melbourne’s inner city roads are the worst location in Victoria for road accident fatalities and serious injuries. The other poor performing areas of the 55 Police Service Areas in Victoria in 2009 were Casey, Monash, Geelong, Yarra Ranges, Booroondara, Hume, Brimbank, Moreland and Dandenong.

Drivers had the highest rate of fatalities followed by passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists.

We each owe a duty of care to fellow road users to ensure that we take care on the roads to avoid the risk of accident. If you have been harmed by somebody else’s negligence, you may be able to seek compensation for the damage caused by them.

Accidents can be caused by a wide-range of factors including speeding, fatigue, alcohol and drug use (e.g amphetamines, cannabis, side-effects of prescription drugs), medical conditions, mobile phone use and other distractions.

  • Speed

Speeding reduces the time drivers have to avoid crashes, their ability to control the vehicle and lengthens stopping distances. These factors increase both the likelihood of having an accident and the severity of the crash outcome.

The risk of involvement in a casualty crash doubles with each 5km/h increase in free travelling speed above 60km/h, and a 5km/h reduction in speed can result in a decrease of at least 15% in the number of crashes.

  • Alcohol

In 2009, Victoria Police breath tested 1.24 million drivers and riders from Booze Bus operations. More than 4000 drivers and riders were caught with an illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over this period. Alcohol is a drug. It acts on the brain and other parts of the nervous system to slow activity down. The more you drink, the higher your blood alcohol level and the stronger the effect of the alcohol on your reflexes and decision making.

  • Drug Use

Approximately 32% of all drivers and motorcyclists killed in 2008 were found to have drugs present in their system. 21% of these drivers and motorcyclists who were killed, tested positive to drugs such as cannabis, amphetamines/ecstacy.

Illegal drugs and prescription drugs may have side-effects which impact on driving ability. They may affect alertness, clear vision, coordination, and reaction time.
  • Fatigue

Around 20% of fatal road accidents involve driver fatigue. Fatigue refers to drowsiness, sleepiness, tiredness and exhaustion. Fatigue reduces driver reaction times and concentration. Fatigue is a high crash risk.
